Robotic Handling of Automobile Windshields


This glass handling and priming system in production at a major automotive glass manufacturer, has increased quality, increased throughput and reduced labor costs since the installation of FANUC Robots. The FANUC R-2000iA robot, equipped with a FANUC Robotics 2D vision system, locates and picks up a windshield from a turntable and places to a justification stand. A second camera mounted to the justification stand locates the center of the glass by finding the “widows peak” in the silk screen. The R-2000iA then picks the glass utilizing the offset provided by the justification camera the R-2000iA articulates windshield around a priming station; 2D vision and an ultraviolet light is used to confirm primer is applied to specification. Finally, the R-2000iA places the part on a conveyor for curing as the glass transfers through a humidity chamber.
